Hey folks, it is Friday! Time for another Friday email.
I hope it has been a good week for you.
Kit is off this weekend for Washington DC for a conference she helped plan with the Radio Preservation Task Force. She writes: “We’re an initiative of the Library of Congress to coordinate the preservation and accessibility of American radio recordings. The conference will feature folks from NPR, various Smithsonian institutions, Wikipedia, the NEH, the LOC, and various broadcasters and researchers. Should be a fun and productive time!”
We are approaching fall graduation (what???) and the college is looking for stories of outstanding graduating seniors. If you have an outstanding senior, send the name my way and I will send it on to Beth Etter in the Deans office. I need to get nominations to Beth by next Friday. Names by Monday or Tuesday would be great!
We have been having lots of conversations over the last months about the tension between free speech and creating positive learning environments. The university is hosting a webinar on this topic.
Our next Conversation for Community (C4C) is this coming Monday, November 6 at noon. This one focuses on scholarship and features MearaNickElizabeth, and Allison. Would be great to have lots of members of our community in Eddy 100 next week. If you are teaching between now and Monday at noon, you could use one of the two attachments about the event to urge your students to attend.
I will attach again the invitation for the departmental reception at NCA.

I have had conversations with several of your about the fatigue you are sensing in your students and yourselves. It is a long haul between the middle of August and Thanksgiving break the end of November. We have been working hard. And there is much work to do between now and holiday break. So we are tired. Any chance you can take a little break this weekend?
I am going to have a drink of some sort this evening in old town with Elizabeth. Maybe a mixed drink at Social or wine and cheese at Welsh Rabbit or Theo Brew at Nuance. I am going to try to sit and do as little as possible for the hour or two we are at drinks. That will be a good break.
And I will try to get in a couple of short runs over the weekend, that will be good for body and soul as well.
I hope for you some mind, body, and soul refreshment this weekend.
Yours,
Greg
