Biography

Hello there! My name is Julie Hartung (they/she), and I'm 4th year PhD Candidate in the Communication Studies Department at CSU.

My research rests in the intersections of gender and sexuality, interpersonal, and intercultural communication, focusing on how identity is navigated, negotiated, and constructed in a variety of contexts. Specifically, my work focuses on LGBTQIA+ communities, particularly identities which are marginalized within the margins of current scholarship on those who avow an LGBTQIA+ identity. For example, my dissertation work focuses on the communication practices of asexual individuals, while an in-progress grounded theory project examines how trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals talk about and consider death and dying.

This semester (Fall 2026), I am teaching the following courses:

  • SPCM 335: Gender and Communication
