Join us for our engaging Gravlee lecture exploring the many faces of resilience in Dr. Patrice M. Buzzanell’s talk, “Lessons in Resilience.”
Resilience has many different meanings and connotations depending on how people constitute, and are situated in, their worldmaking. In this talk, I analyze and critique a series of vignettes connected to memories with momentum, affective sensemaking, vicarious resilience cultivation, and organizing for good and for ill. In concluding each vignette with lessons learned we can ponder how to perform resilience in response to adversities and in anticipation of creating possible futures.
Patrice M. Buzzanell is a Distinguished Professor of Communication at the University of South Florida. Her research, teaching, engagement, and funding coalesce around resilience, feminist organizing, careers including work-life policy, and engineering ethics and design. She has produced 7 edited collections and authored 112 refereed journal articles plus an additional 250 articles, book chapters, and engineering education proceedings. In addition to receiving the International Communication Association’s (ICA) Steven H. Chaffee Career Achievement Award, AAAS and ICA Fellows awards, and the National Communication Association’s Distinguished Scholar award, she also was the Endowed Chair and Director of the Susan Bulkeley Butler Center for Leadership Excellence (Purdue), a Velux Foundation visiting professor (Copenhagen Business School), and Endowed Visiting Professor of the School for Media and Design (Shanghai Jiaotong University). She has served as President of ICA, the Council of Communication Associations, and the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender. She has directed 73 dissertations and theses and served on an additional 103 committees in communication, engineering education, and other disciplines in the United States and other countries. She received the Purdue and USF Outstanding Mentorship Awards and ICA’s B. Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award. The accomplishment about which she is most proud is her six children.
