Dear Folks:
Here, friends, is the email I was going to send on Friday. And then Friday at NCA happened. Hooftah! What a whirlwind of good stuff. Anyway, this is sort of out of date, but here is the letter anyway.
Happy Friday! I am sending this to you from Salt Lake City where lots of us are hanging out at NCA. It has been a busy couple of weeks for the community and conferencing. Twenty or so of our undergraduates hung with faculty, graduate students, and Kalie at NCDD in Denver this last weekend. Kalie tells me that at least two undergraduates got job offers at the conference! What?! How cool.
And NCA has successfully started. We saw a bunch of prospective graduate students at the graduate open house. Our community members have already performed successful presentations. And so much more in front of us.
I want to pause here and note that none of us would have made it to Denver for NCDD or to Salt Lake City for NCA without the help of Nancy and Eliza. A huge shout out to both of you for getting the rest of us to these meetings. Thanks!
Hey did you see Meara’s CIP team featured on Forbes? As you probably know, this cross-university, interdisciplinary team are studying the impact of live classical music on folks with dementia. Check out the story here.

And, our last Conversations for Community (C4C) event of the semester is this coming Tuesday, Nov. 13., from 4:30-5:30 in Walnut 115. I’ll be informally talking with students who are new to the major and/or interested in becoming CMST majors and giving them a sense of what our community is all about. Anyone is welcome to attend. Snacks will be provided! Please share this opportunity with your students.
ACTION ITEM
We have faculty meeting this coming Wednesday. November 14, 2018. 11:00-12:50. LSC 300
We have done remarkable work in faculty meetings over the course of this semester. We will take that work into smaller groups and then bring back some suggestions for code and other changes in the spring.
Meanwhile our final faculty meeting of the calendar year will be the first Wednesday of December. December 5, 2018. We will have a careful and in-depth conversation about the six-year review report draft. Eliza and I will be putting some final touches on parts of the document that wasn’t in the scope of the working groups. I will get the report out as soon after Thanksgiving break as I can so that you have plenty of time to read and reflect on what we have found.
Hey, I hope you all have a good weekend. I will see some of you over the next days here at NCA. Our reception is this evening at 6:30-8:30 p.m. 253A Salt Palace. A few of us will gather for informal check-in around 5:00 tonight. This is a chance to touch base, especially for those of you relatively new to NCA, to make sure you are navigating its nuttiness with some success.
Meet at the convention registration area.
Be well, friends, and take some time for yourself over the next couple of days, OK?
