Drawing on CSU’s Principles of Community, the Department of Communication Studies commits itself the rigorous process of creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive community.

We hold that all members of the community have the responsibility to express their viewpoints with “clarity, rigor, good evidence, and eloquence.”

We also recognize that we do our work in a discipline and society that has long privileged “patriarchy, white supremacy, heteronormativity, ableism” and other forms of supremacist structures. In our department, we are creating a brave space in which we can honestly engage ourselves and each other regarding these structures of power.

We hold ourselves responsible for infusing our teaching, coursework, scholarship, and service with attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We know we will make mistakes in these efforts. And we know we can compassionately hold ourselves accountable for these mistakes.

We recognize that what it means to be human will never stop evolving, and so too, our work will ever evolve.
